Louis Savard – Elisabeth Tremblay

Louis Savard, the son of Joseph Savard and Françoise Bergeron, was born on February 15, 1810 in La Malbaie.

He married Elisabeth Tremblay on November 24, 1840 at la Malbaie.  Louis and Elisabeth were one of the pioneer families of l’Anse au Foin (St. Fulgence).  They arrived there in the Fall of 1842.  Louis donated part of his land for the parish chapel.  Elisabeth contributed to the life of the parish by teaching reading, writing and arithmetic to the children and anyone else who wanted to learn.

In 1870, Louis and Elisabeth joined their sons Henry, Abel and Joseph in St-Félicien.  Louis became a councilor for St-Félicien and his son Joseph, the first mayor.

In the census of 1881, we find Louis and Elisabeth living with their son, François Xavier.  François later emigrates to Manchester, NH, Berlin, NH and eventually to Saskatchewan.

In the 1901 and 1911 census, Elisabeth is living with her son-in-law Jean Baptiste Chartré and her daughter Evangeline.  According to his gravestone, Louis died on 10 August 1893 at the age of 83.

Un Vieux Pionnier Décédé

A St. Félicien, Lac St. Jean, P. Q., le 9 courant s’éteignait après de longues souffrances M. Louis Savard à l’âge de 84 ans.

Le défunt était l’un des premiers colons qui ont ouvert cette paroisse en 1870. Lors du grand feu qui dévasta toute la région du Lac St. Jean, le père Savard arrivait avec sa famille dans la forêt de St. Félicien.

Uu grand nombre de descendants lui survivent: 12 enfants, 90 petits enfants et 11 arrière-petits enfants, chose rare: tous lui survivent á l’exception de trois ou quatre petits enfants. Ils sont dispersés ça et là.

Deux de ses garçons demeurent encore à St. Félicien, deux À Manchester, N. H., un à Lowell, Mass., et un à Milton Mills, N.H.

An Old Pioneer Passes Away

In St. Félicien, Lac St. Jean, P.Q., on the 9th current, Mr. Louis Savard passed away after long suffering at the age of 84.

The deceased was one of the first settlers who opened this parish in 1870. During the great fire that devastated the entire Lac St. Jean region, father Savard arrived with his family in the St. Félicien forest.

A large number of descendants survive him: 12 children, 90 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, a rare occurrence: all survive him except for three or four grandchildren. They are scattered here and there.

Two of his sons still live in St. Félicien, two in Manchester, N.H., one in Lowell, Mass., and one in Milton Mills, N.H.

Le vingt quatre novembre mil huit cent quarante, la dispense triple du trois au quatrième degré de consanguinité accordée par Monsieur Chanoine Vicaire général de Monseigneur Joseph Eugène de Québec en date du vingt du présent mois et après la publication de trois bancs de mariages faite au prone de nos vêpres paroissiale entre Louis Savard cultivateur fils majeur de défunt Joseph Savard et de défunte Francoise Bergeron de cette paroisse d’une part et Elisabeth Tremblay fille mineure de Joseph Tremblay cultivateur et de défunte Elisabeth Desbiens aussi de cette paroisse d’autre part ne s’étant découvert aucun empêchement nous sous signé desservant cette paroisse du consentement du père de la dite Elisabeth Tremblay avons reçu leur mutuel consentement de mariage et leur avons donné la benediction nuptiale en presence de Joseph Savard ami de l’époux et de Guillaume Bergeron ami de l’épouse et de plusieurs autres illettrés ainsi que les époux.

The 24th of November, 1840 after the triple dispensation due to the third to forth degree of consanguinity accorded by Monsieur Chanoine, general victor of Monseigneur Joseph Eugene of Quebec, on the 20 of the present month and after the publication of three banns of marriage done during the parish vepres, between Louis Savard, farmer, major son of deceased Joseph Savard and deceased Francoise Bergeron of this parish on the one part and Elisabeth tremblay, minor daughter of Joseph Tremblay, farmer, and deceased Elisabeth Tremblay also of this parish on the other part.  There being no barriers, we undersigned priests of the parish with the consent of the father of Elisabeth Tremblay have received their mutual consent of marriage and have given them the nuptial blessing in the presence of Joseph Savard, friend of the spouse and Guillaume Bergeron, friend of the bride as well as many other not listed.
