Simon Savart – Marguerite Vinantes
Simon Savart, cartwright, was born on February 2, 1595 in Montreuil. He is son of Jean Savart and Marguerite Thubye. In his baptismal act, written in Latin, one reads that his godfather is Simon Hébert, assisted by Philippe Faucheux, and his godmother is Gillette Boutier [?].
Simon learns the profession of cartwright from his father, but he must have hardly had time to finish his training when his father dies around 1613. Simon, who is in theory 19 years old on April 2, 1614, doesn’t know how to sign his name when he is mentioned as a witness in a lease agreement [étude CXXXI.18]. But three years later on another lease document he signs his name with a carefully penned signature.
From the couple’s recorded births, we know that Simon and Marguerite Vinantes were married before 1618.
We also know that Simon’s wife, Marguerite Vinantes dies in 1629, because on September 7, 1629 [CXXXI.42] of this year, Simon Savart has Marguerite’s inventory probated, and Jean Garce (m Guillemette Vinantes) is subrogated guardian of Simon Savart, son of Simon son of Jean, presumably the only surviving minor child of the couple. Simon’s son, and his uncle Laurent, whom to this date is only 19 years old and who was under Simon’s (the father) tutelage, are both placed with Jean Garce, a barber-surgeon from Montreuil.
One assumes that Simon the father will live at another ten years or more because Simon the son, who is only six years old at his mother’s death, must still must undergo his cartwright training under his father.
